Vasko and the Violin

Screening & Discussion! April 5th, 1:00pm to 3:00pm
Special Guests: Lora Krumova and Maria Yotova (Filmdirectors)

"Vasko and the Violin" is a documentary about the life of Vasko Vasilev, the concertmaster of the Royal Opera in London. The film follows his journey from being a boy from the outskirts of Sofia to becoming one of the greatest violinists of his time. The film is directed by Lora Krumova and Maria Yotova and produced by MAD in BG. Both ladies will be here for the screening.

Vasko Vasilev is the musical prodigy of communist Bulgaria, whose talent was honed in the most prestigious music school of the USSR, and who is also recognized worldwide. He arrived in the West as a poor immigrant on the eve of the fall of the Berlin Wall, and today he is the concertmaster for the coronation of King Charles.

The documentary traces historical events that marked both the Eastern and Western worlds, intertwining with the life of the internationally acclaimed violinist. In front of his eyes, dictators fell and kings ascended, but it turns out that the true value of his talent is to be the delicate thread that connects the East and West in a time of division and fear.

“Vasko and the Violin” is not just a portrait film, but a story of overcoming difficulties, of the strength of character, of kindness in relationships, and of the selflessness of a family that gives everything to provide their child with the chance to follow his inner voice. It is the story of a Bulgarian family that, by chance, in their early youth, creates a genius musician, and along his path, matures to be his support, despite the hardships that life and circumstances bring.
