Christine hat ihren eigenen Kopf und lässt sich nichts vorschreiben. So nennt sie sich Lady Bird, rebelliert auf ihrer katholischen Schule und bewirbt sich gegen den Willen ihrer Mutter bei Colleges an der Ostküste. Obwohl sie sich ständig in die Haare kriegen, lieben sich die beiden sehr. Lady Bird macht erste Erfahrungen mit Jungs und träumt davon, aus ihrer Heimat Sacramento endlich auszubrechen. Doch dann bemerkt sie, dass sie doch einiges für ihr Zuhause übrig hat.

Christine has a mind of her own and won't be told what to do. So she calls herself Lady Bird, rebels at her Catholic school and applies to colleges on the East Coast against her mother's wishes. Although they are constantly at loggerheads, they love each other very much. Lady Bird has her first experiences with boys and dreams of finally breaking out of her home in Sacramento. But then she realises that she does have a few things in common with her home.
